Both Sean and Iris transitioned to new classrooms this fall, and they seem to be adjusting well. Sean's BFF from last year has moved away but he has a new close friend, Nathan, who just moved to DC from Texas (though his parents are African-German and Belgian). We get weekly reports on Iris on Wednesdays from her Libélulas (dragonfly") classroom and here are the most recent -- figured they would be worth sharing. Keep in mind that her school is entirely in Spanish and all the staff are native Spanish speakers...

Iris is working very hard in the classroom on art area. She is practicing how to cut paper,, gluing paper, and painting with tempera paint. She is interested working on Sensorial area with the Brown Stairs and Pink Tower. Also, she was practicing the name of the colors matching the tablets by color. Iris really enjoys working on Practical Life. She feels confident washing the baby, washing dishes, poring water in different containers, transfer objects using tongs, pouring seeds from one pitcher to one and two containers. cutting apples, grasping, pins, etc. Iris has been working with the teacher on Mathematics area with numbers 1 to 9 using the Sandpaper Numbers. She can says the numbers 1 to 10 in sequence when we do the calendar. Now, she will practice matching the symbol with the quantity. Iris is working on Science area with the Animal Puzzles of the fish, horse, turtle, and grasshopper. She is a good helper in the classroom. She uses to help teachers and friends to clean up the tables and floor when somebody spill water. Iris knows many words in Spanish that she practices when she wants to communicate with teachers and friends. At the school she always tries to speak in Spanish. Iris is a good student. It's easy to work with her!

Iris is doing very well at the school. She is listening carefully the teacher directions. She looks quiet and paying attention at circle time. Iris is using the Montessori materials on Practical Life washing dishes, washing the baby, spooning shells, scooping beads, pouring rice, pouring water, spooning water, pins, opening and closing containers, making bubbles, and tongs. She likes the story time, singing songs and playing musical instruments at music class. Iris is practicing her Spanish working on Language area with the vocabulary cards. Also, she is practicing how to match the language cards on the rug and work with the teacher repeating the name of the words. At working time she is quiet, focus, and concentrated in front of her work. Now she knows that we work at the school and we play at the park. Iris likes to work with puzzles, lacing beads, building things with different shapes, and play dough. During this week Iris will be practicing the name of the colors, numbers, and learning new vocabulary.

Iris is becoming more independent in our classroom. She tries to do everything by herself at working time. She likes to be around of the classroom observing what are doing her friends and later she tries to work with the same material. She learns how to use the materials watching her friends. Iris enjoys working with the Montessori material especially in the Practical Life area. She always is busy practicing spooning, pouring water, sorting, scooping, washing dishes , and washing the baby. She received a lesson on Sensoial area (Cylinder Block # 1 and the Tablet of Colors # 1). She likes to work with the teacher on Language area with the vocabulary cards of the fruits, the food, the animals, and the clothes. She is learning how to control her body at circle time when the teacher does the calendar, days of the week, the weather, and a new lesson. Iris likes to play, run, and climb at the park. She is doing a good job!

Iris is already adjusted to her new class. She is learning the new routine in our classroom. She likes to work on Practical Life area spooning, scooping, grasping, pouring rice, pouring water, making bubbles, cutting apples, washing dishes, and washing the baby. Also, she is learning new vocabulary, because she likes to work on Language area with the vocabulary cards. Iris is learning how to set her material on the rug, working in front of her work and put away the material on the shelf. She enjoys coming to the school and discover new Montessori materials in our classroom. She likes to spend time looking the books in the Library area. She is doing a good job, especially at circle time when the teacher does the calendar, the days of the week, and reads the story. Iris is eating and sleeping very well. We are so glad to have her in our class.
