As I think everyone is well aware, we don't find time to do much blogging these days (though plenty of tweets). But, we got great reports about the progress both Sean and Iris are making so I figured I would share. So proud of both of them!
I don't have the text of Sean's latest report card to paste here but this is an excerpt:
And, here was Iris's Spring 2015 Parent Conference report:
Work Habits:
Iris has a natural, wonderful love of learning. She truly spreads her time evenly between areas of the classroom. She spends a good deal of time in the reading corner, movement area, and Practical Life and Sensorial areas (which includes most of the Montessori work for this age). These lessons intend to draw out the child’s attention, build fine and gross motor skills, and introduce the notion of caring for our classroom. She especially loves water-related work, like dish washing, baby washing, and transfer works in which she moves water from point A to B with tools like ladles and basters. She also loves snack preparation (peeling, cutting, etc.). When working attentively, we make a point to not interrupt her.
Independence:
As all toddlers do, Iris finds great joy in having the tools to help herself. She enjoys sweeping her spills, having accessible trash, and a sink for hand-washing. Although she likes to eat on the go still, she is getting more comfortable with our routine of setting her place at the table, eating while sitting, and cleaning up. This is a major accomplishment for this age because there are many steps in this process and it is a challenge to remember what to do next.
Social Development:
Iris enjoys working alone but she especially loves sitting with Reed and reading. She also spends time with Mia. She loves showing affection and gives hugs with enthusiasm. She is very benevolent, yet as anyone would do, becomes upset when something is taken from her. We are demonstrating appropriate verbal/sign messages she can give instead of using her hands to solve this conflict.
Gross Motor/ Fine Motor:
Iris is right on track with her physical developmental milestones. She can run, jump, and kick balls with confidence. She is getting much more coordinated as we challenge the students’ maneuverability. Her trunk muscles are strong and we will soon start to work on “crossing the midline” with activities that engage both sides of the body. Her fine motor skills are excellent. We see these skills at work when she chooses Sensorial materials such as knobbed cylinders.
Language:
Iris has excellent receptive and expressive language abilities. She says many words with confidence and clarity- she sings even more! She has such a musical ear that language is a true strength of hers. Math will likely be very interesting to her.
Looking ahead:
We will be challenging Iris with new work as she becomes ready for it in language and math areas. She sometimes needs to hear our messages more than once if she experiments with not following the rest of class (getting ready to go to the park for instance), but with gentle redirection, complies. We expect this to continue smoothing out as she notices the consistency in our messages and routine.
Go Sean and Iris!
